Near the close of 2015, a good friend of mine introduced me to Misogi; a Shinto practice of ritual purification by washing the entire body.

There are a group of extreme athletes who are reinterpreting this concept and applying it to physical challenges.  The idea is that by overcoming barriers, we stretch ourselves and become anew.

My understanding of Misogi:

  1. You create a monumental physical challenge that you do not know you can complete.
  2. You set a timeline.
  3. You begin training.

To open 2016, I am conducting my very first Misogi.

3 months ago I ran my first ever sub-25min 5k.  Not impressive for competitive runners, but I was proud of it.

On a few occasions, I have remarked that I would like to run a sub-20min 5k.  As of today (Jan 1), I cannot run a 5k under 25min.

So, to make things interesting - I am giving myself 6 weeks (February 15) to run a sub-19min 5k.

I am both nervous and excited for this undertaking.
